KUCHING (24 Nov) – From 22nd to 24th November 2024, Ecomall, Petrajaya was abuzz with excitement as DBKU, in collaboration with Regenerative X Association, hosted a 3-day Karnival Kesihatan dan Kelestarian Alam Sekitar aimed at fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainability. The event had participants from various age groups, particularly children and teenagers. Highlights of the event included the Environmental Poster Competition and the Recycle Fashion Competition, which provided platforms for creativity while addressing critical environmental themes.
The event received overwhelming support and participation, particularly from children and teenagers, making it a perfect platform for educating the younger generation about the importance of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Through hands-on activities and creative challenges, the event successfully instilled environmental values while showcasing the incredible talent and ingenuity of the participants.
The closing ceremony was graced by the presence of Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Junaidi, Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Sarawak, Yang Berbahagia Dato Haji Hilmy Bin Haji Othman, Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Mr. Prestly Ng High Park, President Of Regenerative X Association (Persatuan Penggerak Kesedaran Perubahan Iklim), Mr. Rudzaimeir Bin Malek, Deputy Director Jabatan Perkhidmatan Komuniti (COS) and Mr. Dunsten Mogei, Division Head of Environmental Health Department DBKU.
Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi in his speech emphasized the need to reduce plastic usage to protect the environment. He called for collaborative efforts to maintain cleanliness, encouraged retailers to promote reusable bags over single-use plastics, and highlighted the importance of effective domestic waste management starting at the household level.
Winners of the Environmental Poster Competition were Iszaliha Bt Mejelan (1st Place), Kiu Kwong Yew (2nd Place), and Adeline Lee (3rd Place). Meanwhile, the Recycle Fashion Competition winners included Ell Qhawesya Bt Izz Iskandar (1st Place), Floren Phua Giok Fong (2nd Place), and Ryan Reeves Anak Wendy (3rd Place). Participants were praised for their creativity and originality, with their work reflecting strong environmental messages and innovative use of recyclable materials.
The event received enthusiastic responses not only from participants but also from their parents. Many parents expressed their appreciation for the opportunity provided to their children to learn about environmental conservation in a fun and interactive way. It also fostered creativity by encouraging participants to transform waste into innovative artwork and wearable designs. Additionally, it helped build life skills such as public speaking and teamwork as participants presented their ideas and collaborated on projects. Parents, teachers and community members applauded the event, highlighting its positive impact on the younger generation.
The success of this 3-day event reflects the community’s growing interest in sustainability and the importance of nurturing environmental responsibility from a young age.
